AERO COLLECTIVE  is collaborating with The Architects Collective to design a two-building complex that combines affordable housing with new headquarters for the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the education, health and well being of youth and communities of color. The complex includes 120 affordable housing units for a mix of family sizes and housing earmarked for the City’s homeless, adding to Venice Community Housing’s housing stock.

Programming for the site includes an outdoor courtyard for residents, ample garden space for growing vegetables, fruits and herbs and a learning kitchen to teach residents and community members how to harvest and cook different foods. The building features a two-story brick colonnade giving it a timeless design and helping to ground the structure. One design feature we’re excited about is the “crown” at the top of the Centinela building, a feature that came out of a community engagement participant’s lego model. In addition to working through the design, we’re helping our client set sustainability goals, including potential certification by Energy Star.

The new headquarters for SJLI helps consolidate multiple office locations into one purpose built space. There is ample room for the entire team to work together, increasing productivity. A theatre space doubles as a community asset that can be rented out. There is also a podcast studio, library, meeting rooms, and teaching kitchen that will help SJLI continue to deliver extensive programming to the community.
